Universal Soldier 4: Day of Reckoning – 2012

John Hyams latest film is a sequel to another film he also directed Universal Soldier: Regeneration. Returning for the fourth film in the franchise are Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, and former UFC Heavyweight Champion “The Pit Bull” Andrei Arlovski. The focus is now turned to John played by Scott Adkins (The Expendables 2) who is a victim of a home invasion led by Luc Deveraux (Van Damme) who also murders his wife and daughter. After waking from a coma John goes on the search for Deveraux only to discover more questions that need answering.

Hyams does a great job shooting the action scenes and really makes you feel every punch and kick. One of the best scenes was between Adkins & Arlovski fighting in a sporting goods store and going to town on each other with baseball bats; every swing and hit was cringe inducing. Adkins is a natural fit to play the action hero and fits in well with action star heavyweights like Van Damme and Lundgren. My one main complaint is that unlike the other films Deveraux plays the villain and is seldom seen. Van Damme and Lundgren have very little screen time and serve more as the prize at the end of the maze opposed to being a main focal point.

The story takes a different turn in the series and is more the point of view of the UniSoldiers. They are tired of being controlled by the government and want their freedom so they may reap their revenge. I saw this in 2D and as for it being released in 3D I don’t think it would be worth it and doesn’t really pop off the screen. The film is good if you’re in the mood for mindless action and is a decent rent.
